French door refrigerators resemble a French armoire, with two doors on top and one or two drawers below. In the top doors, you will find the refrigerator space, and in the bottom drawers, the freezer space.

High-end kitchens have been using this style for over a decade now, mainly because of its modern look and effective use of space. Double doors require less space to swing open than top-freezer models, and the open design lets you store bulky items like food trays and pizza boxes where a side-by-side model couldn’t.

Additionally, French door refrigerators are great for families because they maximize the amount of refrigerated space on top while providing accessible, pull-out freezer space below. French door fridges are the flagship model for most brands, so they typically come with the latest features and technological advancements, which also makes them the most expensive models you can buy.

A French door refrigerator has a refrigerator compartment on top and a freezer compartment on the bottom. A French door refrigerator, however, has side-by-side doors on top and a single door or drawer on the bottom, unlike other bottom-freezer models.

French-door refrigerators are usually wider than other double-door refrigerators, though their doors are narrower.

For better organization, some French door refrigerators have drawers between the top and bottom compartments.

Why do some people prefer French door refrigerators to other types? Here are a few reasons.

Selecting a new French door refrigerator will be much easier if you know what you want – and what you don’t want. If you’re considering a particular model, ask the following questions before deciding.

Is the refrigerator large enough for your needs?

The capacity of a refrigerator, or its interior space, is measured in cubic feet. French door refrigerators have capacities ranging from 15 to 30 cubic feet.

In general, a refrigerator that provides 19 to 22 cubic feet of storage space can accommodate a household of four people.

You may prefer, however, an appliance that can hold 30 cubic feet of groceries if you shop in bulk.

Will the refrigerator fit your kitchen space?

The width of French door refrigerators usually ranges from 30 to 36 inches. Their height is usually 69 inches and their depth is usually 26 inches.

Tape measure the width, height, and depth of the area where you plan to place the refrigerator to make sure it will fit.

Depending on your preferences, you may prefer a counter-depth or cabinet-depth French door refrigerator. With a shallow profile, this type of refrigerator won’t extend beyond the edge of your countertop or cabinets.

Will the refrigerator have the sort of finish you prefer?

The three most common finishes for French door refrigerators are stainless steel, black, and white.

Is the refrigerator able to control the temperature to your liking?

All French door refrigerators offer some type of temperature control, but some offer more precise controls than others.

You may also want to look for a model with humidity controls to prevent your produce from wilting.

Is there an extra drawer in the refrigerator?

Some French door refrigerators have one or more extra drawers between the top compartment and the bottom compartment. The extra drawers can enhance your organization. Additionally, you can save some energy by keeping frequently used foods in the drawer. So you don’t have to open the whole refrigerator compartment to get to ketchup.

Is the refrigerator’s shelf adjustable?

Consider a refrigerator with adjustable shelving if you like the idea of customizing its configuration. It is possible to create shelves that span the entire appliance, or you can create shelves that are divided on either side. Additionally, you can adjust shelf height to accommodate taller items, such as bottles of soda or juice.

Is there a water/ice dispenser in the refrigerator?

Water and/or ice dispensers are often built into the doors of French door refrigerators. It is convenient to get ice and water without opening the door. In addition, the components require some storage space within the refrigerator.

If you purchase a French door refrigerator with a water and ice dispenser, we suggest that you look for one with a built-in water filter.

You can typically expect to spend between $1,200 and $8,000 for a good French door refrigerator, depending on its size and features.

$1,200 to $2,000

You can find a small-capacity French door refrigerator in this price range without many extra features.

$2,000 to $3,500

In this price range, French door refrigerators are typically considered “medium-capacity” appliances and tend to have just a few extra features.

$3,000 to $8,000

This broad price range offers many large-capacity French door refrigerators with a wide range of extra features.

  1. I like this type of model far more than a side-by-side or a freezer-on-top model.  The side-by-side always feels too narrow, as you said things like large pizzas don’t fit!.  As for the freezer-on-top models, I always wonder when I will die in the avalanche of frozen food that likes to spill out every time I open that upper door.

I love that all the models you have listed here have gallon-sized door racks but I love the deli drawer and extra door concept of the Samsung model.  That’s the one for me!

    1. Cynthia, I don’t like the refrigerators with freezer on top, never enough room to put everything for my family and have to have a deep chest freezer. I decided to ditch that cheap refrigerator and upgrade to the Samsung French Door and get rid the chest freezer as well.

  2. I have never seen a refrigerator like this before. This is a very interesting new concept for me. I really like this idea as I have a family of 6. Having 2 doors at the top would make opening it easier in certain spaces as well as being able to fit a lot more into it. That would save me from having a chest freezer as well. I wonder if you can get this type in Europe? I really like the Samsung model!

    1. Lisa, I replaced my chest freezer and refrigerator with a Samsung French Door Refrigerator and it was the best decision I made in terms of Kitchen Appliances.

  3. Just in the nick of time. I was looking for a new refrigerator. You definitely included the 7 most popular and traditionally reliable brands.  Lg whirlpool and maytag are household names that I grew up with. But Samsung is changing the game and taking over with the 21.5in touch screen built into the right door. I want that fridge to go with my stove that also have a touch screen. I am going to have to check these out and buy me a new fridge.

    1. The Samsung brand is truly changing the market with smart refrigerators. I have the Samsung French Door model RF28R7351 as black and matches my kitchen well.

  4. Great article.  I generally stay away from refrigerators made by electronics companies like LG or Samsung and prefer traditional appliance manufacturers like Maytag and Whirlpool, but you may have me thinking otherwise. They both look great and have the space needed.  Measuring is so important and one place people forget to measure is the height.  You might have cabinets up there that may have to come out if you don’t measure.  Very thorough. Well done.

    1. Warren, I used to think the same way about staying away from other electronic products such as LG and Samsung. These two are known for wireless phones, not refrigerators. However, I changed my mind and now own a Samsung Refrigerator and I love it.

  5. This article is geared towards  high-end refrigerators to which I have come to appreciate especially if you are looking for mass storage, technology  and of course have a decent budget to facilitate the purchase. Samsung is a quite popular brand I normally go with  it and that’s just for preference. Very much impressed by whirl pool  and its the competitive edge that it has when it come to price and still filling the gap as an  advance modern refrigerator with style.

    1. Steve yes these French Door Refrigerators are high-end premium class and I appreciate my Samsung French Door Refrigerator. When I first heard about the refrigerators was a little skeptical about spending that much money but is well worth it.

  6. hello Jannette! I love your website and the setup is so easy to navigate! Last month I had a broken refrigerator and finding a nice one to match the kitchen decor while also having a great function was very difficult. The French Door refrigerator has to be my favorite! Thanks for sharing!

  7. While I am much more into the functionality and cubic space my wife certainly is far more interested in the aesthetic. I shared with her the range of options you provided and she immediately gravitated to the Café French Door Refrigerator. I too liked that it is a smart fridge and that the hardware could be customized to match my existing kitchen hardware. Top points for GE there. Your number one LG pick as well has many of the GE features and the price point looks like very good value.  Thank you for the buying guide as it will certainly help when I am in the market as to what to look for and ask.

  8. The French door refrigerators are jewels.  They are conveniently set for all kitchen activities by allowing you to control the temperature in individual locations, high freezer modes, spacey for large and small products and much more.  I will have to call the French door refrigerators, The kitchen smart boxes, lol.   Thank you for this website displaying many differences between French door refrigerators to allow consumers to make the best choice for their home.  Very informative and educational.

  9. Hi Janette, I really enjoyed reading your article, particularly as my own Whirlpool French Door Refrigerator is now about 8 years old. It is still working effectively, but soon I shall need to think about replacing it. Your comprehensive review of the different models on offer is certainly great food for thought. Thank you for sharing your expertise in this area. Jenni.

  10. Hi Jannette, Thank you for the well-informed buyer’s guide for the seven best French door Refrigerators. I’m better educated about this subject now. I can say once I’m in the market for a fridge it’s going to be a French door fridge thanks to this post. I know what questions to ask and what things I should consider thinking about. There are a lot of options to think about and to see which one would fit my decor and needs.

  11. Hi Jannette,

At first I thought it was about the side-by-side but no, this French door type looks more practical for me! The Whirlpool one is the least expensive one but sounds not a bad option. I really like the stainless steel look so I hope Whirlpool has smudge-free version for me to choose.
