The Echo is very popular and the 3rd generation is even better compared to competitors like Google Home. The new speaker and design, Echo Dot is voice controlled smart speaker with Alexa that will fit any room. You just ask Alexa for music, news, information and along with more. With the Echo Dot you can call almost anyone and control other compatible smart home devices with your voice.

Playing Music

You can use your voice to play a song, artist, or genre through Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora and others.  With compatible Echo devices in different rooms, can fill your whole home with music.  I like using my Echo Dot 3rd Generation to play music for parties, family dinners and alone while cleaning house. You can also listen to Audibles, podcasts, ratio stations, or pair with Fire TV to voice control movies and entertainment.

Alexa happy to help you.

Can make your life easier at home by using the device to set timers, add items to your lists, create calendar events and reminders. You can check the news, weather or traffic. I use Alexa to check weather and traffic conditions when making plans to take grand children to park. If you missed watching your favorite sport teams play, can even ask for the scores and scheduled showtimes. The feature used most throughout my house is movie showtimes and restaurant hours, as nothing like planning a dinner and movie.

Voice control more through your home.

You can manage compatible smart home devices using your voice that will allow you to turn on the light, dim your light or turn thermostat up.  Enable Alexa guard to get smart alerts if your Echo detects the sound of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, or glass breaking.

Keep family in sync

Have a big house, can use the Echo to communicate with family members in different parts of your house. After dinner is ready can just simply let everyone know its ready instead of going across house or upstairs letting family members know. Got children, you can use to tell your children due homework or bedtime.

You can also use the Echo to make hand free calls to most phone numbers in United States, Canada, Mexico, and United Kingdom.

Alexa Skills

Tens of thousands of skills and counting, Alexa gets smarter. These skills include apps along with helping you do more, like playing relaxing sound or testing your music knowledge. Just ask Alexa, what are your top skills?

Alexa for Kids

You can make your Echo kid friendly at no extra cost by enabling Amazon FreeTime in your Alexa app. Can automatically filter explicit songs, add approved contacts, set time limits, or review activity with easy to use parental controls in the Amazon Parent Dashboard. Learn more about FreeTime on Alexa.

Designed to protect privacy

Alexa and Echo devices are designed with multiple layers of privacy protection. For instance, Echo Dot has a microphone off button that electronically disconnects the microphones and you also have control over your voice recordings. You can view, hear and delete them anytime you like. Learn more about privacy.

Wow, Janette! I had no idea Echo could do soooo much!  And I love the option to turn off the microphone! I hate it when our Home Pod is listening and then starts talking when it thinks you’re talking to it.  It’d creepy.  We have the Amazon Tap also and since it’s Bluetooth, we can take it from room to room, or even outside.

Is it easy to set up so you can talk to things in your home?  Sometimes I find all this technology neat but it can be overwhelming setting it up.

Thank you for reviewing this item.

Hello!  Great info on the Echo.  I was given a Google Mini last year for Christmas, but it seemed to take a lot of effort to get it to work with our TV.  We pretty much had to do everything on our phones, and just connect the phone to the TV via the Mini.  We just recently got a Fire Stick.  It’s much more straight forward, and you don’t really need to do anything on your phone.  The voice control in particular is way better.

So, long story short, I think we need to get something like the Echo Dot to integrate our home.  I am really glad you provided info on the 3rd Generation.  It will help us make a decision on our purchase.  Rhonda

Hello Roxy, I personally watched my daughter struggle to properly set up the Google mini last year and took her about month to figure out and now she does not use at all. I bought her a Echo Dot for Christmas this year, as found mine to be easy to setup and use everyday.

Thank you for this review of the Echo Dot 3rd Generation. I must admit that I am a bit behind in this area of home assistant technology. I feel that 2020 is going to be the year I start this new experience and I need more reviews like this to help guide me to making an informed decision.

You mention that in order to play music in different rooms of the house I would need other compatible Echo devices. Would these be just speakers or other Echo Dots? Also, does the primary Echo Dot that is plugged into the internet have to be in the center of the home or could it be on one end yet still effectively communicate across to the other side?

The Echo Dot devices are very handy to have, and I absolutely love mine but I have a few questions about this one. As someone with an older echo dot device is there an advantage to upgrading to the 3rd generation? Such as skills that only work with the 3rd generation or anything else?

I have tried Google Home in the past and the sound quality wasn’t as good as I was expecting so it really disappointed me in that matter. I have never heard about this device but after reading your review I went to check it out and it actually looks amazing! Not to mention the amount of features it has. I will definitely be looking more into Echo and see if it can fit what I’m looking for.

This certainly would be a handy device to have in the house.  At the moment I am limited to just using a smartphone and understand little about how all the rest of it works.

Does one have to buy smart switches or just smart bulbs?  It would also mean purchasing a smart TV and sound system and ???

It could get a little pricy or, I suppose one could ease themselves into the technology.

I like the idea but sometimes I think it’s just going to fast for most of us to keep up.

That said, the future is here and I kind of wonder what it’s going to look like in another, what, even ten years?

A bit scary but exciting at the same time.

Yes you will need to buy smart switches to use Echo Dot in your home. Your concerns on what technology would be like with Echo products within 10 years and what else Amazon brings in respect to features would be of concern to many and this would be covered by Amazon in their privacy policy and terms.

The Echo Dot 3rd Generation is such a cool gadget. I’m just so amazed at how technology has gotten so advanced.

By the way, thanks for giving me all these valid reasons to buy the Echo Dot. I was actually having second thoughts about it but after reading all the things it can do for my home and kids, I think it’s a no-brainer. It’s pretty easy to use. Every home needs this cool stuff not only for convenience but also for security purposes.

I have been eyeing the echo for quite some time and cannot bring myself to purchase it as i always get stuck between echo and google home.  This article answered all my questions and showed me how much more you can expand on the alexa devices over google- I will be purchasing for Christmas now!

The Echo dot does seem to be appropriate for my next speaker upgrade. I personally never would have associated myself with the amazon speaker before this. I just thought they could never do as much as you have described them to.

Currently, I have a JBL Pulse 2, there is no voice recognition, although I definitely believe the sound quality is better as well as being louder.

Additionally, my pulse 2 is battery run, while this one you have to plug in. Don’t you think this is a problem?

Yes also agree with the Echo Dot causing a problem, especially if the power goes out and does not have a generator as a backup to use their device.

    Hi Jannette,

I really enjoyed your review of the echo dot. I have had the 2nd generation dot for around a year now and although I don’t use it all that much, my children love it. They play games and quizzes and it keeps them entertained for hours. I am considering buying a third generation dot, but i’m not sure if its a big enough leap from mine. What do you think? Thanks in advance, Andrew

The 2nd generation has entertained your children with Alexa skills and games, the 3rd generation will do the same. The upgrade would be the same, just neater looking device and Children will interact more cause it is new improved device.

Amazon Echo Dot 3rd Generation is an Amazon product with Alexa built-in. The music you would like to listen to is your choice through services like Amazon Music, Apple Music and more. The speakers you would not wont to have loud as the volume would go, just like other speakers can bust them.

I have made us of so many blue tooth device love the years and so many of them have good and quality audio which i loved so much. Currently i have one but its connections to my mobile phone doesn’t stay active when i am far away from it and that matters a lot. I am pleased with the echo device but i don’t know how long a distance it can stay to maintain a connection.

This is just the Eco Dot 3rd Generation product review that is the speaker that will connect with other Amazon devices like the ring doorbell. Are you thinking about the Amazon Ring device which is connected to the speaker and mobile phone?

Thanks for the article about the Echo Dot 3.  We have had an Alexa and a dot since they first came out.  I did not know how much they have improved.  Communicating throughout the house is a feature that we can really use.  We use the music feature quite a bit in our early version but it seems like this version sounds better and is easier to use.  One this that is great about the dot is that you can order through it at Amazon and then track the order.  I don’t know how we lived without the echo dot.  Thanks for the informative article.

You are right with ordering through Amazon about getting tracking for your order and you also get better customer support by purchasing through Amazon.
